pardon the brief interruption…

Posted by ElizabethGenco on Thursday, September 28 2006 at 10:03 pm

So, Boorman and I were all set to post pages today. And then…

Oh, nevermind.

So, I have an interview. It’s with Barry Lyga, a wonderful new author (with a secret comics identity of sorts) whose young adult novel THE AMAZING ADVENTURES OF FANBOY AND GOTH GIRL has just hit the shelves. Alas and alack, I do not want to post an interview. I want to post pages.

So.

Please continue to stand by for pages. And thanks for bearing with us.

Scheherazade: Pages 14 and a half

Posted by ElizabethGenco on Thursday, September 21 2006 at 9:35 pm

Yes, we know this is a rather meager update compared to the number of pages we like to get out there in an update. What can we say? Sometimes life dishes up the drama, and poor Boorman has had much, much more than his fair share in the past few months. And yet still the work rocks! I know you think so, because that’s what you keep tellin’ me. Thank you.

More soon. Like, most likely on the weekend kind of soon. Libate a bottle of scotch and make with the good vibes…

Scheherazade promo zine

Posted by ElizabethGenco on Tuesday, September 12 2006 at 12:26 am

So, as some of you reading this may know, I’ve been making zines of one form or another for a while now; in fact, some of you may even remember this thing called PLATFORM that I used to write, about fiddling Irish tunes in the NYC subways (yes, for real). I’ve made quite a few zines, handmade comics and chapbooks in the past year or so (all of which you can read about on another one of my sites, Streetfables).

Yeah, I love zines. I’ll surely make zines in some form or another for the duration of my creative life, no matter where that road may ultimately lead. But making zines the way I like to make ‘em takes time. And that’s something that I don’t have much of these days. Yet, I love zines. What to do?

The answer, my dears, is the one shot: a zine made from just one sheet of paper.

schzde zine

What does this have to do with SCHEHERAZADE? Well, I made a SCHEHERAZADE one shot, which you can find here. I also put together a short tutorial on how you can make one shots of your own. Because spreading the zinelove is one thing that I do.

Feel free to take that SCHEHERAZADE zine and make copies and pass it around or link to it or whatever. If you dig on the Chemistry Set, it really helps to spread the word somehow. We do thank you.

And definitely make some one shots of your own, then drop me a note with the results. Because I love zines, and I love to see what you all get up to.

midnight scheherazade: pages 6-9

Posted by ElizabethGenco on Saturday, August 26 2006 at 11:59 pm

Burning the late night lamps here in Brooklyn, while over on the other side of the world, Boorman busted his chops to get these pages out. Our apologies for the lateness, but both our schedules have been all messed up due to things like the flu and 90 hour work weeks. We swear it won’t always be like this.

Be sure to give Boorman extra special props and snaps for this lusciousness; he really worked hard through fever, nausea and mouthfuls of crackers to bring ‘em to you at this hour. And with that…

Scheherazade: From the Library

Posted by ElizabethGenco on Wednesday, August 16 2006 at 12:25 am

First, thanks from the bottoms of our hearts for all the kind words on SCHEHERAZADE pages 1 - 3! elizabeth genco and adam boormanEveryone here at team Chemset is tickled at the feedback we’ve recieved on the site so far. We really appreciate the support and are way glad that folks are enjoying the show.

Here’s some administrivia that you didn’t get last week because my day job has me hanging by a tether this month: first, Boorman and I agree that maximum webcomic enjoyment potential increases proportionally to the number of pages posted in a single update. As such, going forward, our page updates will be beefier yet less frequent: about four pages every two weeks. This is a schedule that’s both easy on the crazymakin’ and meets our standard of delivering a satisfying comics experience every time.

Second, we’re none the fans of dead air around here, so on those off-weeks, I’ll bring you From The Library, a series of extra special five-question mini-interviews with some of my all-time favorite storytellers, artists and free spirits. These are the souls behind the stories on my nightstand and the pictures in my mind, including folks from outside of comics. I’m cooking up a great list and kind of can’t believe who has said yes so far — someone had better pinch me.

Lastly, as a special treat this week, we’ve got two pages for you AND our first interview, with none other than my good friend Brian Wood. How do you like them apples?

If you haven’t checked out SCHEHERAZADE yet, here’s the first page and pages two and three.

What is ‘Scheherazade’?

Posted by ChrisArrant on Sunday, August 6 2006 at 12:59 pm

SCHEHERAZADE is a modern urban tapestry woven from old magic and old stories. It’s a sheltered young woman in a house without windows, peeling back the blinders and throwing open the shutters. It’s the tale of a dying man and his last victim, whose stories just might help him find the redemption he craves.

“SCHEHERAZADE will be a series of shorts held together by a tale of a young storyteller and her captor,” says Genco. “The format allows me free reign with some of my favorite toys within the context of a bigger story. I’ve always been a big nerd for comics anthologies but I know it’s tough to make them work in print. SCHEHERAZADE is my chance to do an anthology my way, with lots of creative collaboration and no restrictions.”

Elizabeth Genco keeps one foot in the Northeastern woods and the other in Brooklyn, New York, where she pours her love of myth, magic, old school horror and esoterica into comics and stories. She is the author of WEIRD SISTER, RED, and PORTRAITS OF TWENTY-TWO KEYS, all of which are available through Streetfables, a small press that she runs with her husband, Leland Purvis.
Elizabeth is a member of the Endicott Studio, a collective of artists who work extensively with myth and folklore, and contributes regularly to their blog. For more, visit http://www.elizabethgenco.com.

Adam Boorman brings SCHEHERAZADE to life.
