Kid Houdini Free Comic Book Day Book!
Posted by DwightMacPherson on Wednesday, March 5 2008 at 9:32 am
Please excuse the interruption in our story, but I wanted to use this opportunity to share more information about Viper Comics’ Free Comic Book Day Book which will feature none other than Kid Houdini and the Silver Dollar Misfits!
We are excited to say the book will feature a cover illustration by Jack Lawrence (of “Lions, Tigers and Bears” fame). Jack’s a busy, busy chap, so I’d like to publicly say thank you, Jack, for taking time out to hook a brother up. I owe you one–er–okay, more than one. Cheers, my friend!
As you know, Free Comic Book Day is May 3rd and then, just one month later–in June–Kid Houdini and the Silver Dollar Misfits Volume 1 will be released! That’s right… JUNE! You heard it here first, my loyal friends! That means the graphic novel will appear in the next issue of Previews! Can you believe it?! I can’t tell you how excited we are about the release of this book! My 12 year-old and 9 year-old are just enthralled with it. Chris Eliopoulos (of Marvel’s “Franklin Richards” fame) had this to say:
“Kid Houdini is a fun all-ages read. How do I know? The enjoyment I got out of it was exceeded only by the enjoyment my two 8-year-olds got. They spent the day after reading it, repeating the name ‘Hans’ over and over and laughing to themselves. A delight!”
Please, my friends… let your shops know about the Free Comic Book Day book and ask them to order it for you. I cannot stress this point strongly enough: it is imperative that you let them know you want it. Retailers are going to order a ton of Marvel’s and DC’s Free Comic Book Day books, I promise you that. But they will not order a book they don’t believe there’s a demand for… that simple. That’s where you come in. Please, let your retailer know you want it–and that you believe it will appeal to a lot of people. Judging from the reaction we’ve received thus far, we believe it will.
With that said, we will disappear for now, but you can rest assured that we will return next week with the continuation of our story. As always, we thank you–our friends–for reading and spreading the word!
Sincerely yours,
Dwight L. MacPherson (with Worth Gowell and Kevin Conley)

Great news, Dwight! Thank you for this incredible cover, Jack! Thanks to Chris E. for sharing it with his 8 year olds, and I understand Dwight’s and Worth’s kids are enjoying it as well. Kids reading comics is always cool, and Dwight crafted a story adults can enjoy as well, wonderfully illustrated by Worth! I guess that means were working on volume 2 currently! Thank you to all the folks at Viper for believing in this project, and making a dream I’ve believed in since 1976, that I would someday be part of a comic book creative team and be able to buy a comic I’d worked on from a comics shop! Kid Houdini And The Silver Dollar Misfits is a magical story, and this trio of Dwight, Worth, and I are benefitting from residual magic!
You made my day! Happy Wednesday everyone!

Hey I saw Kid Houdini’s listing in the Free Comic Book Day list, and while I was at my local shop over the weekend I made sure they would be ordering some. I look forward to checking it out in hardcopy form, passing it onto my Dad who loves Houdini stuff, and eventually getting the graphic novel for my son (he’s only 9 mos. so I’ve got time).
Love the sample pages so far! Great artwork and a real fun story. I’m an editor so I can always nit-pick, but I’ll keep it to myself and just say that I’m really enjoying the title. Keep up the great work!

Thanks, CJevic! We appreciate you, my friend! I really look forward to hearing your thoughts on the book.
Stuart: Awesome! Thanks so much for doing that. I really hope your father enjoys it and gets a sense of the respect and admiration that we share for the legendary Harry Houdini.
Oh, yes… from one editor to another, I can definitely understand. Just bear in mind that our misfit friends are largely uneducated–with the exception of Harry and Lydia. But that will be addressed in a future book. Don’t want to give anything away, don’t you know. :-)
Thank you for reading and supporting Kid Houdini. We appreciate you!
