The Surreal Adventures of Edgar Allan Poo: Page 59

Posted by DwightMacPherson on Monday, February 18 2008 at 9:49 am

Welcome to the 59th installment of The Surreal Adventures of Edgar Allan Poo!

I am happy to say that 50 pages of art are complete for the second volume of Edgar Allan Poo and we are well ahead of schedule for an August release. New pages are coming in every day and I am absolutely blown away by the work new artist Avery Butterworth is doing. I definitely think you will be, too.

On that note, I will bid you adieu and thank you for joining us and helping to spread the word. We appreciate you very, very much!

The Gloom - Week 16

Posted by TonyLee on Friday, February 15 2008 at 6:12 am

Has it been a week already, my little chickadees? Quite possibly, the days have merged together here in the highest tower of Castle Bastard. But, unshaven, blearily eyed and twitching like an inmate with tourettes strapped to a lighting circuit, I appear, with two more pages of Gloom goodness for you.

I’d like to thank the three or so people who commented last week - your comments made us happy. Of course, it also made us concerned that our comic is being read by three or so people - which of course is a little worrying. So, if you didn’t comment last week, comment this week! Make Daddy happy.

Right then, we left the Gloom and the Professor caught by a sodden Mousey Blonde - but meanwhile, elsewhere in Manhattan…

Exercises in Style: Pekar-esque

Posted by JamesDougan on Tuesday, February 12 2008 at 1:09 am

There are many, many ways to tell a story, especially in the comics medium. Few people have thought about the different ways to tell a story in comics than Matt Madden, whether it’s through his own comics, in his work as a teacher at the School of Visual Arts, his website promoting the exploration of comics formalism at Exercises in Style, or the excellent book version of same, 99 Ways to Tell A Story. The idea with these experiments is that there are literally dozens of ways to approach the telling of even a relatively simple incident, in this case someone responding to a request for the time and then opening the refrigerator. Being a geek for comics formalism, this stuff just makes all my chromosomes stand on end.

One the more…unique ways I’ve seen of presenting a story in comics is the way Harvey Pekar does it. Anyone who has seen the movie version of AMERICAN SPLENDOR is familiar with how Harvey writes his scripts. A few boxes, text written in pencil, with the occasional stick figure to supply panel description. You know, like this.

Thus, without further ado, I present the latest Exercise, entitled “Pekar-esque”:

Photobucket

Matt has been gracious enough to offer to include this on the Guest Artist page of the EiS website, so thanks to him for that. Now, this being The Chemistry Set and all - anyone out there interested in giving a shot at drawing this? If so, please leave a comment here or drop me a line at chatterbox DOT comix AT gmail DOT com. (Matt’s expressed a willingness to post that effort at the EiS blog as well, if that sweetens the deal.)

The Surreal Adventures of Edgar Allan Poo: Page 58

Posted by DwightMacPherson on Monday, February 11 2008 at 12:19 am

Welcome to the 58th installment of The Surreal Adventures of Edgar Allan Poo!

We thank you for joining us and hope you’ve enjoyed this week’s episode. If you did, please take a moment to let us know. And, if you would be so kind, let someone know about it. We’d surely appreciate it.

Just an update: Poo Book 2 is coming along nicely. 47 pages of art are complete and we are slaving away to ensure this book is released when it’s supposed to be. So fear not, my friends… Volume 2 will be here before you know it.

And so we bid you adieu until next week!

Sometimes we get explosions. But in every case, we get new comics, delivered every day by talented up-and-coming creators, including three Xeric Award winners.

Always free, and just for you.
