FCHS - Interview Us!

Posted by Vito Delsante on Saturday, September 29 2007 at 9:04 am

Hey hey, it’s writer of comics Vito Delsante here. And I need your help.

With the impending launch of FCHS at The Chemistry Set, I wanted to do something kind of cool and different as an introductory interview for the comic. So, here’s what I need from you.

A question, any question, pertaining to FCHS, comics, writing, art…nothing crass, but getting personal is fine (as long as it has a reason).

What we’re going to do is film the interview and put the video up on YouTube and then post it all over the place.

But we need YOUR QUESTIONS!

Send questions to: vito at chemsetcomics dot com
Thanks. Expect the interview to go up in Mid-November…plenty of time to get your brain thinking of a good one (or more!)

FCHS - Know Your FCHS Lions (Part 2)

Posted by Vito Delsante on Saturday, September 29 2007 at 9:00 am

Leading up to the December debut of our new weekly strip, FCHS, Rachel and I thought it would be cool to introduce you to our cast. Last week, we met head cheerleader, Kennedy Sanders. This week, say hello to Julia Faraday:
FCHS - Jules

Rachel Freire - Jules has a feel of ‘girl next door’ to her. I tend to draw her active, playing a sport or riding her skates. She’s thin but not dainty and femininity is not her strong point, so fitting in with the cheerleaders might be a bit awkward. But she’s got her reasons…

Vito Delsante - Yeah, she’s got reasons for 75% of what she does. Jules is based on two other girls that I knew in school (you’ll find that most everyone in FCHS is). Jules is the all-American girl; her modern day equivalent would be Mandy Moore or Amanda Bynes. Jules is going to be at the center of a lot of change in this story, most of it unexpected. Because she’s been so predictable, and so “exactly what you think” up to now, expect Jules to end her Senior year a lot different than she started it, and it has little to nothing to do with the fact that she’s a virgin.

Rachel Freire - So while I’ve been getting used to drawin’ Kennedy and Jules I’ve been picturing something resembling Veronica and Betty, respectively. More specifically, Kennedy reminds me of MJ (around her first appearance) in that she’s confident that she’s attractive and desirable. I keep sketching Jules…as more of a tomboy, so I think it might be awkward for her to try and “girly” it up and be a cheerleader.

FCHS - Know Your FCHS Lions (Part 1)

Posted by Vito Delsante on Saturday, September 22 2007 at 9:00 am

Leading up to the debut of FCHS, I thought it’d be cool to meet the cast. Since FCHS takes place during Senior Year, there’s a lot you don’t know about the characters that has happened since Freshman year. First up is Kennedy Sanders:

FCHS - Kenni

Rachel Freire - Kennedy is one cool chick, and she knows it, though she may take it for granted that every guy is gonna dig her. Given her looks, she might assume that a fella is more interested in playing backseat-bingo than goin’ steady. I’ve usually drawn her with a knowing smile or seductive gaze.

Vito Delsante - In creating Kennedy, I wanted Rachel to draw the typical high school bombshell. She’s based on two girls I knew in particular, and in describing one of them recently to an old friend, I realized who Kennedy was; Kennedy is a woman surrounded by girls, if only in appearance. She’s sexy, voluptuous…she’s the “va-va-voom.” If this were a teen exploitation film, she’d be played by Jayne Mansfield with red hair.

Filipino comicker Andrew Drilon joins TCS

Posted by ChrisArrant on Tuesday, September 18 2007 at 11:04 pm

“These are wonderful,” says Warren Ellis. “I swear, the Pinoy make comics in the same way that the Icelandic make music … Fucking genius.”

‘Kare-kare’ is a traditional Filipino dish that incorporates various assorted ingredients into a delicious, meaty stew. ‘Komiks’ is a term for sequential art made in the Philippines, referring to Pinoy mass-produced newsprint comic books. Put these two together and you have Kare-Kare Komiks, the new semi-monthly webcomic at The Chemistry Set. Kare-Kare Komiks is an ongoing collection of self-contained short comics by Andrew Drilon that explores new flavors of the sequential art experience.

Andrew Drilon is a writer, artist, editor and graphic designer from the Philippines. He has been featured among The Philippine Daily Inquirer’s “22 under 22 Avant-Guardians” and Meg Magazine’s “Top 50 Achievers”, as one of the country’s hottest young voices. He has contributed to two National Book Award-winning anthologies-Siglo: Freedom and Siglo: Passion-and is the co-editor of the PBBY-recommended graphic anthology, Project: Hero. He has self-published a series of ashcan comics, is a regular contributor to K-Zone Magazine, and maintains a weekly Sunday strip at The Philippine Star.

“Andrew Drilon does beautiful, otherworldly work– he makes comics like nobody else,” says Matt Fraction, writer of Casanova and The Immortal Iron Fist. “Kare-Kare is one of my favorite things on the internet ever. It’s even better than that one time where they blew up that whale everywhere.”

The first comic will debut on September 19th, and is entited ‘Mang Tomas the Storyhunter’. Drilon will post favorites from his run on The Engine starting with ‘The Legend of Caraboy!’ on Sept. 26, ‘Secret Heart’ on Oct. 3rd, ‘Two Tiny Things’ on Oct. 10th, and ‘What Will You Bring?’ on Oct. 17th.
