Backstage Pass to 1 WAY TICKET

That’s the pencils from this week’s installment. Dan himself has said he prefers the pencilled panel 3 to the finish product, so we thought we’d take you backstage and let you see the inner workings. Here’s the script I gave Dan:

PAGE 12
PANEL 1: SULLY’s yelling again at JONAS, but this time NANCY is in the way and bears the brunt of it. SULLY’s trying to explain why he’s so mad, but doing it rather heatedly. JONAS isn’t even in view, we’re just seeing SULLY going off with NANCY being in the verbal line of fire.
SULLY: Don’t defend him, Nancy. He broke the guitar.

Everyone saw it. Everyone heard it.

NANCY: But exploding like this isn’t going to help anyone.

SULLY: JONAS has never been a help to anyone.

Ever.

…Why is he even here?

PANEL 2: SULLY turns his back on the group; you see him in the bottom right corner with the group on the left. Not a big gap, but almost noticeable. NANCY is still talking at him and in his direction. She’s angry, but restrained. Her arms are straightened at her sides with her fists clenched.
NANCY: Take a minute and think about what you were about to do, SULLY.

OWEN: What are we going to do about tonight?

PANEL 3: A sideview shot. On the left is a silhouette of the van and the group standing outside it. ON the right is SULLY, separate and walking off. I’d like someway to highlight SULLY leaving; maybe a coloring trick or something? What do you think?
SULLY: … I’ll figure it out.

PANEL 4: Originally this was two panels, but I merged them. If you think they should be separate, go ahead. NANCY’s looking off to panel right to SULLY walking away (off screen), with JONAS back near the van being consoled by OWEN and SYLVIA looking on. OWEN’s got his arm on JONAS’ shoulder and SYLVIA is looking concerned. NANCY’s got her hands on her hips; not mad at SULLY, but kind of disappointed.
OWEN:Can he borrow a guitar from someone at the sheds?

SYLVIA: For tonight? No one gets there until late, and the show at Beers & Steers is too soon.

NANCY: It’ll work out.

OWEN: No amount of reverb is going to fix this.

PANEL 5: This panel switches to a new scene, of SULLY wandering in the night. He’s in a non-urban area, like a nearby park. The caption is NANCY’s words from the previous scene segueing to this one; to better identify that, I was thinking to do a floating head of NANCY to on the left-side of the caption. Sort of like an IM icon, but not really. Just a floating head. In the next page we’ll have more than one person doing a voice-over, so identifying the people like this will be important and be part of the visual vocabulary we’re developing for the book (like the “My Name Is” stickers).

NANCY (voiceover caption): …It’ll work out.
